“En plein air” is a French phrase that means “in open air. It is also the name of a new art exhibit in Morehead City. Although plein air painting gained prominence in the 19th century, it has recently become popular in Eastern North Carolina.

Typically, plein air groups meet in various locations and seek to recreate the natural settings that surround them. They find their inspiration in representing life and nature as it appears to them. Although many plein air artists paint from the same location, the perspectives and pieces themselves may differ dramatically.

The Carolina Artist Studio Gallery in Morehead City invites the public to experience the classic technique of plein air painting on Sept. 9 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
